यहां कई हिन्दू व इस्लामी स्थापत्यकला के मिश्रण देखने को मिलते हैं। बल्कि कई इस्लामी अलंकरणों में तो इस्लाम में हराम (वर्जित) नमूने भी मिलते हैं, जैसे—अज़दहे, हाथी व पक्षी, जहां आमतौर पर इस्लामी अलंकरणों में ज्यामितीय नमूने, लिखाइयां, आयतें आदि ही फलकों की सजावट में दिखाई देतीं हैं।
ताज महल का निर्माण करवाने वाले बादशाह शाहजहां को उसके पुत्र औरंगजेब ने आगरा के किले में ही कैद रखा था यहीं से वो अपनी मृतक पत्नी की याद में बनवाए गए इस भवन को देखते थे। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि शाहजहां की मृत्यु मुस्म्मान बुर्ज में हुई थी और इस बुर्ज में संगमरमर का खूबसूरत छज्जा है।
